Once  the cancer is suspected patient is advised to Contrast enhanced computerised  tomography (CECT) of the abdomain to know the exact location, size of tumour , it’s extent and spread of the tumour. Other investigations which may be useful are Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) , Bone scans, MRI brain or PET scan may be considered depending upon the patients disease.

Treatment of kidney cancers

Once the diagnosis of kidney cancer is confirmed, team of surgeons and cancer specialists discuss the various modalities of treatment available. Surgery remains the main treatment.

Surgery can be performed by laparoscopic or conventional surgery. The routine surgery which is performed for kidney cancers is radical nephrectomy where the kidney and all the cancerous tissue is removed. In case of very small tumours, partial nephrectomy or target cancer tissue therapy can be used. Chemotherapy and immunotherapy plays a considerable role after surgery and in patients where surgery cannot be performed because of patients condition and extensive spread of disease.

Recovery after surgery

Prognosis after surgery and complete removal of tumour is good once detected early and complete treatment is followed. Patients can live normal life after complete treatment. The usual hospital stay after surgery is 3-5 days.
